Physical Education (PE) is an essential part of a student's education, as well as being a requirement of NYS and of graduation from high school.
If your child has to be excused from Physical Education for a medical reason, they will need a note from a healthcare provider, and the reason and length of time they will be excused should be documented. ( A school nurse may excuse a student from physical education for one day only without a provider's note.) If your child may do a modified PE plan, please discuss this with your provider and have them include it in their note.
If a student is medically excused from PE for more than 1 week, they would need a second note to clear them for return if the injury occurred at school, or they participate in school athletics.
Being excused from Physically Education automatically excludes a student from active play in recess/ sports.
