Welcome to Chancellor Livingston Elementary

Welcome to Chancellor Livingston Elementary School, located in the historic village of Rhinebeck in Dutchess County, New York. Our school was built in 1967 and named after Robert R. Livingston, who was Chancellor of the State of New York, landlord of Clermont, and a diplomat.

Today our school has about 400 students in grades kindergarten through five. Chancellor is a school where students want to attend to learn. Our staff believes that every child will have an equal opportunity for a quality education and that all children can learn. The staff accepts the task of helping to develop responsible students. Besides our strong academic program we have many interesting opportunities to expand and extend student learning in the arts, in our after school activities, and through our enrichment programs. Our children learn social skills to become responsible learners and participate in regular morning meetings as we build a community of learners at Chancellor Livingston Elementary School. Some current CLS highlights include:

  • A home grown PBIS initiative that focuses on positive reinforcement through acknowledging acts of kindness through affirmations, discussions, and behavioral modeling;
  • Show Choir performances for community groups;
  • Classes working together with buddy classes on extra special projects;
  • Electives course options from cooking to dance, sensory activities, newspaper, visual arts, and much more;
  • Enrichment courses for CLS Yearbook and media, Mathematics, Physical Education, STEM education, environmental advocacy, etc;
  • Field trips to take advantage of the historic and cultural events in the Hudson Valley;
  • Partnerships with local not-for-profit organizations (like the Rhinebeck Science Foundation, and Culture Connect) that help foster growth and expansion of our curriculum
  • STEM Lab that delivers Next Generation Science Standards aligned STEM Modules K-5 that feed into the work we are doing at Bulkley Middle School and Rhinebeck High School
  • adoption of Big Ideas Mathematics as our K-5 Math program - focusing on the discovery model of teaching and learning real world math
  • 3-year rollout of the Lucy Caulkins' Writing Units of Study that will create a K-5 common language around students living a "Writer's Life"
  • New for the 2021-2022 school year - we will begin to utilize Science 21 as our K-5 Science curriculum
